Poetry Prompt - Move Your Body, Move Your Words

Anyone who knows me knows I use dance to help me write. Dancing helps me shake things up, move  and transform old and stuck energy, and set intentions for my Dance helps me to connect to my muse, to my soul and to the Divine.

Motion, within the dance, helps me transform my energy so I can connect to my muse, my soul, my higher power. It is a team that comes to the page and motion and transformation is what helps me bring them all together so the words flow like rain falls to the earth, effortlessly, and gravity pulls it down, the words don't have a choice.

How has motion transformed my life? Some of the best writing I've ever done was after dancing with intention before writing and even taking breaks to dance between the writing. The transformation comes because as you move all the stuck energy in your body, your connection to your muse, to your higher self that helps to inspire you, gets stronger and stronger. The more you write, the more you understand yourself, others, and life. It transforms you on multiple levels. The better your words flow, the better you understand everything, the more you and your writing transform.

I'm taking a muse facilitator class and they are asking us to think about what we will call ourselves when the class comes to a close. The facilitator gave a couple of examples like, often late muse, crafty muse, etc.

I used to call myself the dancing muse, because I use dance and motion to connect and to help others to connect and channel their words to the page. It is what I do. I think I thought it was presumptuous of me to call myself a muse even though what I do is to inspire people to write and create. That is exactly what a muse does so, I need to claim myself as a muse just as I've claimed myself as a writer and a poet. We'll see if that means I claim myself as the dancing muse or if something else comes up before the end of our class.

On to the prompts!

Poetry Prompts:

Take a moment, write down a few words that you want to focus on while you dance. Put on some fun music and move your body with the intention of shaking out stuck energy, moving your body to get your words moving. Then sit and write for ten minutes about how you feel using a few of those words you wrote down before you danced.

Word Prompts:

change your mind
lift your spirits
dancing with your muse

Alternative Prompt:

Get out your poetry magnets and play with your words until you begin to see a poem starting to form. Or, if you don't have magnets, create found poetry with an old newspaper or take a photo of the page in a book you want to play with and use a photo editor to black all the words you don't want to use leaving your poem.

  1. Love the prompt but I wasn't up for dancing today (of course that's when I need it the most, but still...). What I did instead was to dance a bit longer with my words than I normally do, playing with their choreography: https://unassortedstories.wordpress.com/2017/10/11/the-night-my-brow-knitted-a-sweater/

  5. I combined this prompt and the 30 Days of Haiga prompt and made a somewhat outraged and profane Haibun. So, if anyone has issues with outrage, profanity, or Haibuns, don't read this piece.
