Day 11: Falling Through The Cracks

“Your soulmate wasn't supposed to be perfect. You were meant to see the cracks in her soul and fill them with what you have and she was meant to see yours. Together you would be complete.”
Shannon L. Alder

Welcome to Day 11! Today’s prompt is Falling through the cracks. Nothing is perfect and sometimes, things do slip through those pesky cracks. I found the quote above on Goodreads and love the idea that when we blend our imperfections, we create something beautiful. How do you deal with things that slip through? Is it ok to reveal our flaws? Do you need to be brave to fall?

Suggested poetry form: Cascade

Word Prompts:        unexpected
            imperfection
            slipping
            with new eyes
            begin again

Remember, these are only suggestions. Follow your muse.

Don’t forget to read and comment on the poems of other OctPoWriMo participants. Happy Writing!

  1. Today I am the obnoxious twit who hollers "FIRST!"
Mine would have been a long cascade poem, but I opted to make it a brief, hard-hitting free verse instead.

    1. I agree. Adding anything more would have been too much. This packs the perfect punch. Well done!

    1. I'm so happy you enjoyed it. The cascade form is one of my favorites. I love how you used a quilt as a metaphor for relationship.

Stripped souls sew strength from splintered spaces - beautiful imagery!

  6. Today's prompt did a great job at getting me out of my comfort zone. I'm not sure the writing is good, but is sure is vulnerable: https://unassortedstories.wordpress.com/2018/10/11/a-heroins-journey/

    1. I enjoyed your allegory, the pacing and the intervening inner monologue. It’s so true, having a kid around, especially an opionated determined kid, is a hero’s journey. Thank you.

  9. Hi everyone

I write at night and seem to miss most of you. Here is my offering for today's prompt. A bit too honest than what I am used to writing. Don't know the rules of prose poetry but going to claim this one is😁

    1. Think we are all in different time zones, which makes it tricky! I'm in the Netherlands, so even though my entry showed up at 4am or so according to this page, let me assure you it definitely wasn't :p

    3. This is definitely so honest and so true. It's beautiful. Yes, I think we're all in different time zones, though I suspect you're closer to mine (I'm in Malaysia).

    4. Beautiful piece. I think you captured what many people feel. I hear you about posting late. I post after school and end up way down on the list. I've read each of your posts and have enjoyed every one!

  12. I absolutely fell off the bandwagon for a week due to life happening and being totally out of spoons. I doubt I'll ever catch up, and I feel crappy about it, but I decided to give today a final shot to see if I could maybe get my brain to move after days of total blank.

It's an absolutely crappy cascade, but it did get written so I'm posting it (even though I hate hate hate it). I might not get around to everyone's poems, sorry, but I will try to read as many as I can.

    1. It's not crappy at all. I could see this as a performance piece.

Don't worry about the days before. It's not a competition. :) By the way, I've never heard "being totally out of spoons." Great expression!

    2. Thank you so much Michele! As for 'out of spoons', that's actually a reference to mental health and coping mechanisms. A good explanation is here:

  15. I have no idea why, but these poems started to bring out the romantic in me. Which is an interesting twist. Also, my decision to use the prompts (not the forms) has carried me to interesting places.

  25. Falling through the cracks, happens when the checks and balances for a system are not given the attention they deserve. As a society we take the system for granted and start following it blindly without individual reasoning for a given circumstance. Then falling through the cracks become a routine rather than a rare event...

    Falling through the cracks....

    To uphold the human dignity...
To be able to execute the fundamental rights..
To ensure equality and fairness to ALL...
    Every life matters.We fail often...
Every life matters. We can do better...

Victims on daily basis, people suffer
Falling through the cracks of the system, some succumb
Apathy of the world, indifferent silence
To uphold the human dignity, we fail often

Many are charged for the counts that they didn't commit
Many didn't do their jobs meant to be legit
Systems are as good as the people in it
To be able to execute the fundamental rights.. we fail often

Be a part of the whole system
Make your vote count and voice heard
Silent indifference, a detriment for democracy
To ensure equality and fairness to all..

Every life matters.. we fail often
Every life matters.. we can do better...sr
