They say scent is the most powerful of our senses. Even the slightest hint of an aroma can trigger intense memories. Each time I smell roasted peppers, I’m instantly transported back into my grandmother’s kitchen. It fills me with happiness. If I get a whiff of a particular perfume, memories of my mother instantly fill my head. Scent and memory are forever linked.
Sometimes the way something smells has the opposite effect. Some odors can make you physically ill or pull forth unpleasant memories. What’s the first thing you think of when someone mentions a skunk or rotting garbage? You don’t have to experience the event first hand for it to elicit a strong reaction.

Looks delicious! Great choice for poetry form. One of my favorites!
DeleteToday's bit is metaphorical for abuse, and before anyone says "I hope that's not autobiographical," it is, and I'm not sorry I wrote it. I know this sort of subject matter makes some people uncomfortable. It should. If it ever stops making you uncomfortable, there's a problem.
ReplyDeleteThe Scent
Powerful piece. It's so important to bring this subject out into the light. Thank you for sharing.

Great title. It made me want to read it, and then I had to find out why the beer was only for drinking-what else would you do with it! A wonderful distillation of a good philosophy, to live and let live.
DeleteI agree. Great title and I liked the feeling of peace as I finished your poem.

ReplyDeleteLol. I always wonder if people are aware when they "over-perfume"...
DeleteDay 8. I gotta say, I pulled from some remote, so far unexplored corners of memory for this one. The title ended up more meta than I intended, though.
