I suppose I'm a bit of a late-comer to the poetry slam movement, but as I linked from one video of his to another and then another, I began to feel the words in ways I had not before. I dug deeper and found other slam poets that moved me, challenged me, and inspired me to push my own writing in new ways. Here is one of my favorites of the performances I found:
Writing Prompt: Begin with the words "Love is like..." and brainstorm all the things that come to mind. Use this list as a jumping off point for a poem that compares love to a single object as in the video. Or use many of your ideas to string together a "Laundry List of Love". Most important, HAVE FUN!
Suggested Poetry Form: Ode
~Amy McGrath
Share your poetry with us by linking up. Make sure you visit your neighbors one or two before and after. If you are last on the list go back to the beginning of the list. If you are the first few on the list please go back to the day before and visit the last on the list if you haven't already. Have fun!

Mine wasn't slam poetry. I just went with what came to my head. I hope that's okay.
ReplyDeleteThat's absolutely FINE! I doubt mine will be slam poetry either. I only mentioned it in this prompt to introduce Taylor to everyone.
DeleteHe did a great job and it reminds me how slam poetry can't fit into one specific style, either. I'm of the belief that any poem may be performed brilliantly by anyone. I'm about to go to one of my favorite places to scribe my version of love, Amy. Thanks for the prompt!
DeleteYou're welcome, Julie! I'm a huge fan of his and most teachers I know have seen or heard his "What Teachers Make" and can't help but cheer. I suppose it's time for me to sit down and respond to my own prompt. ;)
